Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

November, 2018. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grant was recently awarded to Dr. Michael Lithgow, Associate Professor, Communication Studies with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Lithgow’s research explores how rural and Indigenous communities in Mexico and Argentina bridge the digital divide on their own terms, designing and creating their own Information and Communication Technology (ICT) networks. There is much to be learned from these communities and lessons that could have implications for other communities facing connectivity barriers, including for those here in Canada.

The Partnership Engage Grants provide timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making for non-academic organizations. These partnerships let non-academic organizations and researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise, and capabilities to solve and learn from each organization’s unique challenges. Transforming lives and transforming communities.

Writer in Residence

A Writer in Residence is an invited artist who spends 60% of the one-year residency working on his or her own writing projects and 40% of the residency as a resource for students, faculty, the university community and the writing community. The Writer in Residence advises these groups on all aspects of the writing process: from taking a manuscript from creation to publication. The Writer in Residence often participates in public readings and other literary events and can also serve faculty as a research and teaching resource.

Community Newspaper 2019 News Media Internship Program for Students

For the 2019 program year, the C.A. MacLean Foundation is sponsoring eight minimum ten-week internships during the summer of 2019 for journalism students. The internship program will allow students to learn first-hand the importance of community journalism, having them work alongside the editors, reporters and photographers of the community newspapers in Alberta or Northwest Territories. It is the foundation’s hope that this inaugural program will carry-over and become an annual sponsorship, helping to cultivate the next generation of great journalists.

Students do not have to be a journalism or communications major to be eligible, though first consideration will be given to those academic streams. Students should be completing their first year of post-secondary education at minimum in order to be deemed eligible for the funded program. An application form must be completed in full and include both the student’s resume (referencing any part time work, internships, activities, scholarships/awards) and samples of work. Completion of the form and additional information does not constitute an application of acceptances into this program.

NextGen: Catalyst for Change in Canadian Story Telling

NextGen: Catalyst for Change in Canadian Storytelling is a two-day conference that brings together a hybrid audience of media educators, scholars, young creators, and industry influencers to consider how to support and encourage diverse Canadian storytelling. Through a mix of panels, talks, screenings, and breakout workshops, participants will learn about the qualities of authentic storytelling and discuss how we can create more ideal conditions for creativity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and in creative screen industries. The conference will make space for new voices, providing a platform for young people to articulate the film and media spaces they would like to see at post-secondary media training programs and beyond.

Faculty receives President’s Award for Research and Scholarly Excellence

Associate Professor Karen Wall, who has been with the Communication Studies faculty since 2006, has received the 2018 PARSE award. This will allow her and a colleague to expand upon their work in previous publications in completing a book manuscript on the history of the Banff School of Fine Arts and its significance in regional networks of extension education and cultural development.
